Vyatta and Carpathia's InstantOn™ cloud

One constant theme I hear from our customers is the lack of real networking in cloud platforms.  Sure there may be some perimeter security and most likely host-based vm filters – or perhaps maybe even some clever use of vswitches.  Or in the case of vmware environments, hypervisor aware p-switches like those in the Cisco Nexus line.  But at the end of the day, the networking capabilities in the cloud leave much to be desired.

Today, Carpathia and Vyatta have announced a collaboration around cloud networking and security.  Carpathia’s InstantOn platform now supports a per tenant Vyatta virtual machine, providing customers with an enterprise-grade firewall, intrusion prevention and VPN capabilities.  This now puts the power in the customer’s hands, allowing them to control fine grain security within a cloud application.  Our customers can provision one or more Vyatta virtual machines.  Not only does this allow them to set policy, but it also provides inspection of traffic between virtual machines using the built-in IPS capabilities.  Working closely with our orchestration partner Yunteq, we have fully integrated Vyatta into the Carpathia InstantOn cloud, allowing one click provisioning of a Vyatta instance.

Oh, and the great news for our customers is Carpathia also has joined the Vyatta VSPL program which allows equally flexible licensing of Vyatta!

This is just the tip of the iceberg.  We will be talking more about the 2.2 release of our cloud platform soon, which will include some real customer use cases.  I won’t steal my own thunder on our other capabilities within our network stack.  Lets just say the feedback from the customers who have been early adopters of this technology has been glowing…

I'm not sure if you can do what you're trying to do with Vyatta. The only way I can think of you assinnigg your public IPs to the servers is by putting them at the same level of Vyatta (eth0), basically sitting on the Internet with nothing in between that requires an IP address. Unless your ISP gives you control of a complete subnet or is willing to add your router into their routing table, I don't see how to make it work in that configuration. Why do you want to assign the public IPs on each server and not use NAT? Is this for Microsoft Direct Access or something? Can your ISP add your router to their routing table? Also, in theory, if your ISP gave you control of a complete subnet, then your router could control all routes for that subnet sending traffic to and fro but just with a block of addresses you would need a public routing entry so that Internet servers know to go through Vyatta to get to your servers.I don't know for sure but a managed switch may help you as well. A switch instead of a router could allow you to monitor traffic and firewall the network the switch sits on, so an uplink port would go to the Internet while other ports would plug into your servers.Hope this helps. Let me know if I can clarify anything or if something I wrote didn't make sense.Good luck.
